HDB Toilet Repair (And The Headaches That Follows)

Nothing about technology here, but I thought I’d just share this for reference of people who may encounter the same issue.

Prelude:

Neighbour goes to HDB and complain that their ceiling is leaking. HDB comes to inspect their place and came knocking on my door. No one’s at home, so they called me a couple of days later to fix a day to come to my place to check the toilets.

HDB folks came, took a quick look at my toilets and started to tell me about procedures, how to repair and stuff. What makes them so sure it’s my toilet that’s leaking then? I asked them to do some conclusive tests before we start to arrange for repairs. Who knows the water might be leaking from some other places. So another couple of days later, they came to do a flood test.

Note: Other than flood test, there are 2 more kinds of tests.

First is the dry test, where they seal your toilet for a week to keep it dry and after that, if the leak continues then the origin is somewhere else other than the toilet.

Then there’s the dye test, where they flood the toilet and put a dye into the water. That would be very conclusive to show the origin of the water because your neighbor’s ceiling, walls, whatever, will be stained with the dye if the leak is indeed from your toilet. Not something that I want to do to my poor neighbors.

Anyway, after the flood test, we went down to our neighbor’s place and saw water leaking. Not the very severe kind, but the droplets were forming quite quickly. Not 100% conclusive but I went with the opinion of HDB that my toilets needed repair.

So, as responsible people, we arranged with HDB to send their contractor for an evaluation and make arrangements to start the repair. Another couple of days for this arrangement.

There were some unhappiness after this with my neighbor because they didn’t agree with the date that I chose to start work. Anyway, I don’t to talk about it here.

Repair starts 3 weeks later after a hectic rush to arrange the logistic for the repair. I had to arrange for my baby girl to stay at parents’ place, clear my work before going on leave etc etc.

Preparation:

The hacking of the floor is going to create a big mess. The whole house is going to be very dusty, based on experiences shared by friends who went through the same repairs. So make sure you get enough protection and covers for your furniture.

Day 1:

The workers came and hack down my toilet floor. Drilling is a pain. The noise is terrible!

End of the day, they coat the floor with this non-shrink grout thing to prepare for the cement and water proofing the next day. Dust was everywhere as expected. It’s very very dusty. Don’t underestimate the mess.

Day 2:

This is a fast one. One guy to finish the job in like half a day.

First they put apply the water proofing. The water proof layer dried very quickly with fans blowing, so lend them the fans if you can.

After that, the cement goes in. Very quickly done. The cement has to be dry before the tile can be laid on the next day.

Day 3:

The 3rd day is for tile laying.

Day 4:

The contractors come back to tie up lose ends, wash up the toilet.

Problem:

After washing, we inspected the place and discovered defects.

1. My tap was damaged.

2. The old tiles were badly chipped at some areas. I went to a friend’s place and look at their repair which was completed about 2 weeks before. Their’s was nicely done. No chips and cracks.

3. The toilet drainage was clogged after the washing.

We called up HDB to come and look at the defects and also inspect the site to make sure the repairs were in order. HDB didn’t turn up at the agreed timing. Wasted my time waiting for them. In fact, I don’t think the HDB people even had intention to come. They were pushing everything to their contractors, which I think is utterly irresponsible.

We are still pursuing this with HDB and the contractors. They are wasting a lot of time and energy. The last straw is bringing this to the media.

Google Plus Is Now Available For Everyone Except Me

I’m down with a terrible flu this week, so the blogging slowed down as well.

davegirouard-google-plus-tweet

Saw this tweet yesterday, didn’t think it was anytime soon anyway. But Google announced something else: Google+ is now available for public. Really? No. Google Apps users like me are left out because Google can’t get us the Profiles portion on Google Apps. I have read their rationale from forums etc, but the main gripe is that there’s no timeline. In March, they said coming soon, Juiy they said the same thing. It’s September now.

So when are we getting it?

First Downtime Encountered With M1

I experienced the first downtime with M1 today. It started at about 8.30pm and recovered at 11.30pm. Approximately 3 hours of downtime. No good. Having come from a telco background, this is really very serious. From the Hardwarezone forums, it appears that the outage is widespread. A lot of people from all over Singapore are affected. Symptom is that you can’t get an IP from M1.

I can’t be bothered to call the help desk, because it will be a useless wait for nothing. Let’s see what reason M1 comes up with for this outage. But whatever it is, it has made a big dent in their reputation.

Finally I Get My Blogger Back

I decided to check out the domain administration page of my Google Apps Account today in the hope of finding the option to turn on Google Profiles. I thought, Google might want to surprise me. Profiles is not there, but I found something yet. Finally, I get my Blogger access back!

I almost stopped blogging these 2 months because I had to use another Gmail account for logging in and this is screwing up my blog pictures that I saved on Picasa with my Google Apps Account. I was really so pissed, I wanted to move the blog back to my webhosting account. All the new updates ended up in another Picasa account.

I’m glad they got the Blogger issue fixed. Now the next thing that I hope to get, is my Google Profiles, so that I can get on Google+. To the Google Engineers working on the post-transition issues: Thanks a bunch!

Google+ For Google Apps – Are We Even Getting It?

After my last episode with transition to the new Google infrastructure, I have been considering whether I should stay on Google Apps. Another one of my blog is on Google, my mails with my own domain is also with Google and I’m paying for extra storage on my mail and Picassa. Tons of my photos are with Google. Google created the stickiness which I’m ready to accept, given the brillant track record they have for their services.

Now, Google+ is launched. My friends told me that their Picassa photos appear automatically on G+, they are porting their profiles over from Facebook, and they are asking me for my G+ account. And all of them are surprise that I don’t have it, given that I have been preaching to everyone the amazing benefits of using Google Apps.

I have been reading forums and it’s not surprising to find that there are tons of people like me, stuck! The common sentiment is, ‘it’s ok, we trust Google will do something about this, but WHEN?!’. Google has been silent about this. There’s no indication at all on the prospect of Google Apps users getting Google+ (and getting my Blogger account back).

The only sure way I can get it now, is to actually to move my domain out of Google, cancel my Apps account and register a personal account with my yibi.org email address. The next best and natural choice is Apple’s iCloud, but maybe just hosting my mails back at my own server.

Well, let’s see if Google can fix this fast. Otherwise, I’m going to get started on moving.

Google Apps Boo-Boo

For once, I’m so upset with Google Apps. I have been using Google Apps for my own domain since 2009. I love the mail app, the calendar, etc etc. And over the years I have converted alot of my friends to Google Apps from their webhosting. You can’t beat it, it’s free!

Lately, Google started consolidating all their services. Legacy apps like Picasa, Analytics etc are merged into Google Apps, so that there’s a single point of control and ownership. As an avid supporter, I opted for the transition immediately.

Everything was ok initially, until I tried editing my baby girl’s blog that’s hosted on Blogger. I couldn’t get myself authenticated with the Google Apps account. I went on to read up on the conflicting account resolution stuff and did all the steps that were stated. Nothing works. My Google Apps account had no access to Blogger for whatever reason. There’s no way I could enable this service from the domain administration page at Google Apps. I get ‘Service Not Available’ when I try to login to Blogger with my Google Apps account and I kept getting referred back to enable the service in my control panel. And obviously the option is not even there!

Fortunate thing is that I could still login with another account out of Google Apps to administer the blog. It would be really unimaginable I lost data or ownership to other services like Picasa.

I submitted my domain to Blogger in one of the help threads in the forums. Hopefully Blogger can get this resolved as soon as possible.

SingNet – Subtly Discouraging You From Terminating Their Service

This is nothing technical, just some thoughts and rants.

My contract for ADSL is ending soon, in June and I have decided not to continue the service because I have cheaper alternatives. I hate calling call centres and end up waiting for some operator to pick up the phone, so I headed for SingNet’s website to search for online means to terminate my account. And lucky me I thought, SingNet has an online form to terminate their service. Well, spoke too soon. The hyperlink at http://www.singnet.com.sg/customer/termination_broadband_login.html returned 404, page not found. I thought this must be a plot to subtly discourage me from termination.

I was persistent. Sent in a feedback form on the SingTel website indicating my intention to termination and informing them that the link to terminate isn’t working. As usual, the automated reply says they will get back to me etc etc etc. Minutes later, I received a seemingly innocent mailer for an offer to re-contract. Coincidence? No way! It looks like it’s system generated but I suspect it was triggered by a living person. Again another attempt to stop me from termination.

I might be having too wild an imagination, but I thought it makes sense. It’s 6 days (4th working day since I sent the feedback on Friday) since I sent the feedback, so I’m just sent another chaser. Let’s see how long they are going to ignore me. :)

Bluetooth Support In Ubuntu Is Weak…..

I just got myself a bluetooth keyboard to get rid of all the wires running on my desk. First thing I tried was to pair it with my notebook running Ubuntu 10.10. Pairing was ok. And that’s about it?! It was painful trying to get the keyboard properly connected. There’s no indication in dmesg that a keyboard is found, and after a few tries restarting bluetooth, restarting the keyboard, dmesg showed HID device detected, ie the keyboard, but it still doesn’t work.

At first I thought it could be the keyboard itself. Afterall, I got it from http://ww.taobao.com. So, I decided to pair it with my iPhone. Seamless. Paired, got it working right away. Switched off the keyboard, turned it on again and iPhone connected the keyboard automatically. My Macbook was the ultimate. Even in sleep mode, it was holding on to the connection to the keyboard. and I could wake the Macbook from sleep mode with this keyboard. The experience was perfect!

So, what’s wrong with Ubuntu? I know, with some troubleshooting and tinkering, I can definitely get it to work eventually, but it’s so much more troublesome compared to Mac. The Ubuntu desktop experience has improved and surpassed other Linux distros, but it’s still way way way behind Mac.

Enough of rants, I still need to try to get the keyboard to work. Shall update the blog once I solve the problem.

Give Way To Ambulance…Please!

This is an overdue, post. Something that I saw on the road and need to get it off my chest.

I was behind an ambulance few weeks back, stuck at a red light. There was a driver infront, who didn’t know how to move aside and give way. And even if the driver did, I don’t think the ambulance would be able to beat the red light and cross the junction. I don’t think the traffic from the adjacent junction with green light would give way to the ambulance.

My wife pointed to me that the paramedics seem to be trying hard to resusitate the patient. The whole ambulance was  shaking from the furious pumping by the paramedics. We could see from the silhouette on the rear windows that the paramedic was performing CPR on the patient.

The hospital is about 7-8 mins from the location that we were at, assuming that the ambulance is unobstructed all the way. With all the obstruction, the whole trip could take about 15mins or more. That few more minutes could mean alot of difference to the patient, worse case, it could be death. I happened to be going the same way as the ambulance, there were 2 more traffic lights that they ambulance was stuck at, so more time wasted.

If the patient really dies because of the obstruction, it’s really quite sad. More should be done to ensure that emergency vehicles are unobstructed, it could be education, could be enforcement or legislation. I just saw on the Taiwanese news that a driver could potentially be charged with causing death to another person. This could be too extreme, but it illustrates the gravity of the issue.
